Bespoke Oak Stair Treads & Risers — Matching Floors Seamlessly

Your staircase is one of the first things people see when they enter a home. Yet too often, it’s treated as an afterthought — finished with white risers, off-the-shelf nosings, or trims that don’t quite match the floor.
At JS Woodcraft Flooring, we manufacture bespoke oak stair treads and risers in-house to ensure a completely seamless transition from floor to staircase. Here’s how we do it — and why it makes all the difference.
Why Stair Detailing Matters
When your flooring is beautifully finished in a bespoke colour, the last thing you want is:
A mismatched stair nose
Plastic trims
Visible joins on the front edge
A different shade of oak on the stairs
A staircase should feel like a natural extension of the floor — not a separate product.
1️⃣ Templating — Precision Before Production
Every staircase is slightly different.
Walls aren’t always straight.
reads aren’t always perfectly square.
Risers can vary by millimetres.
That’s why templating is essential.
What is templating?
Templating involves carefully measuring each tread and riser individually before manufacturing begins. Instead of relying on “standard” sizes, we:
✔ Measure each stair precisely
✔ Account for wall irregularities
✔ Check overhang depth
✔ Confirm finished floor height
This ensures that once installed, your oak stair cladding fits perfectly — without gaps, filler, or awkward scribing.
Off-the-shelf stair kits simply can’t achieve this level of precision.
2️⃣ Bonded Stair Nosings — No Visible Lines
One of the biggest visual giveaways of a lower-quality stair finish is a separate stair nosing strip.
Many suppliers attach a front lip piece separately — which often leaves:
A visible glue line
A joint that may move over time
A slightly different tone at the edge
At JS Woodcraft, we produce bonded stair treads, meaning:
✔ The nosing is professionally bonded as one unit
✔ The grain flows naturally over the front edge
✔ No visible join line
✔ Greater structural integrity
This creates a solid, high-end appearance that feels intentional — not pieced together.
3️⃣ Side Returns — Finishing the Exposed Edges
If your staircase has exposed sides, you need proper returns.
What are side returns?
Side returns wrap the flooring finish around the exposed edge of the tread, so you don’t see:
Raw ply edges
Colour mismatch
Open gaps
We manufacture:
Mitred returns
Flush side finishes
Custom edge details
Bespoke trims to match your flooring colour exactly
Because we finish everything in-house, the stairs and floor are colour-matched perfectly — whether it’s rustic grade, prime grade, brushed, tumbled, or bespoke toned.
Why Engineered Oak Is Ideal for Stair Cladding
We use the same high-quality engineered oak constructions as our flooring:
16/4mm (16mm board with 4mm oak wear layer)
20/6mm (20mm board with 6mm oak wear layer)
This means:
✔ Stability
✔ Underfloor heating compatibility (for adjacent floors)
✔ Long-term durability
✔ The ability to refinish in future
Because everything is produced at our Yorkshire factory, we control:
Colour consistency
Sheen level
Brushing and texture
Grain selection
The Result — One Continuous Design
When done properly, the floor flows into the staircase effortlessly.
No mismatched tone. No visible join line.
Just a cohesive, high-quality oak finish from room to room and floor to floor.
