When choosing your engineered oak flooring, one question comes up time and time again:

At JS Woodcraft, our answer is a confident yes — but it all depends on the look, feel, and practicality you’re after.

From slim herringbone blocks to bold 300mm-wide planks, board size plays a key role in both design and performance. Here's what to consider when selecting your perfect floor.

✅ 1. Width – Create the Look You Want

Wide boards (220mm, 260mm, even 300mm) are bold, modern, and perfect for large, open-plan spaces. Fewer joins create a cleaner, more seamless feel and really show off the natural beauty of the oak grain.

Narrower boards (100mm to 140mm) bring texture and rhythm to traditional interiors or more compact spaces. They’re ideal for period properties or where you want to add depth without overpowering the room.

✅ 2. Length – Longer Boards, Bigger Impact

Longer lengths (up to 2.8m) stretch the eye and make a space feel more expansive and luxurious. Shorter lengths can give a more natural, varied look — especially in older homes or more compact areas.

Our engineered oak planks come in random/mixed lengths up to 2.8m, combining premium appearance with smart functionality.

✅ 3. Patterns & Proportions – It’s All in the Detail

When it comes to herringbone, chevron, mansion weave, or basket weave, size affects how bold or subtle your floor appears.

Small blocks (e.g. 350 x 70mm) give a traditional, intricate look
Larger formats (like 600 x 120mm) feel more contemporary and spacious
Mansion weave or basket weave adds a unique, luxurious design statement

✅ 4. Consider the Room Size & Ceiling Height

Small space? Go for narrower planks or smaller blocks to stay in proportion.Large rooms or high ceilings? Go big with wide planks or large-format chevron for maximum impact. The goal is balance – and we’re happy to help guide you through the options.

Engineered oak is perfect for underfloor heating, and board size can slightly influence how quickly the floor responds to heat. Smaller blocks warm up faster; wider planks retain heat longer. Whatever you choose, our engineered construction ensures exceptional stability and performance.
