How to Get Rid of Scratches on Engineered Oak Flooring

Engineered oak flooring is a durable and stylish choice, but like any wood floor, it can develop scratches over time due to daily wear and tear.

The good news is that many scratches can be treated effectively, restoring the beauty of your floor. The method you use will depend on the depth and severity of the scratch.

Below, we outline different solutions for minor, moderate, and deep scratches on engineered oak flooring.

Step 1: Assess the Severity of the Scratch

Before treating the scratch, determine how deep it is:

  • Surface-level scratches – These affect only the top finish and are relatively easy to fix.

  • Moderate scratches – These penetrate slightly into the wood veneer but don’t expose the core.

  • Deep scratches or gouges – These go through the veneer, requiring more extensive repairs.

Step 2: Fixing Surface-Level Scratches

Surface scratches often occur due to furniture movement, dirt, or grit.. Here’s how to remove them:

  1. Clean the Area – Wipe the scratched area with a soft cloth and a mild wood cleaner to remove any dust or debris.

  2. Use a Wood Repair Marker or Wax Stick – Choose a color-matched marker or wax stick designed for engineered oak. Apply it to the scratch and blend it in using a soft cloth.

  3. Buff the Surface – Use a microfiber cloth to buff the repaired area, blending it with the surrounding wood.

Step 3: Repairing Moderate Scratches

If the scratch has gone beyond the finish but hasn’t exposed the plywood core, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the Scratch – Remove any dust or grime using a damp cloth and let the area dry completely.

  2. Apply a Touch-Up Oil or Hardwax Oil – Using a small brush, apply a matching wood oil or hardwax oil to the scratch. Let it absorb for a few minutes, then wipe away the excess.

  3. Lightly Buff the Area – Once dry, use a soft cloth to blend the repaired area into the surrounding flooring.

Step 4: Repairing Deep Scratches or Gouges

For deeper damage that exposes the core beneath the veneer, consider these options:

  1. Wood Filler for Deep Gouges

    • Choose a wood filler that matches your engineered oak flooring color.

    • Apply the filler into the scratch using a putty knife, pressing it in firmly.

    • Allow it to dry completely, then lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the area.

    • Finish with a matching wood oil or sealant to blend it in.

  2. Replacing the Plank (for Severe Damage)

    • If the scratch is too deep to repair seamlessly, plank replacement may be the best option.

    • Engineered oak flooring allows for individual plank replacement, using a special tool to cut the defected plank out.

    • If glued down, a professional may be required to cut out and replace the damaged plank.

Step 5: Preventing Future Scratches

To minimize scratches and keep your engineered oak flooring looking pristine:

  • Use felt pads on furniture legs to prevent scratches from movement.

  • Place rugs or mats in high-traffic areas.

  • Avoid dragging heavy objects across the floor.

  • Sweep and mop regularly to remove abrasive dirt and debris.

  • Trim pet claws to prevent deep scratches.

Final Thoughts

Scratches on engineered oak flooring are inevitable but can be easily managed with the right repair techniques. Whether you’re dealing with minor marks or deeper gouges, following these steps will help restore your floor’s natural beauty. If in doubt, consult your flooring supplier for the best products to match your specific finish and ensure long-lasting results.
